What do I do with an old Encyclopedia set?
Q. I have an old encyclopedia set from 1911 and an English dictionary set from 1897. What can I do with these? They are only taking up room in my house.
Asked by becky - Mon Dec 15 17:17:59 2008 - Books & Authors - 1 Answers - Comments
A. A lot depends on their condition - if they are falling apart - bin them If they are in good condition take one book from each set to various antique book dealers and ask for their value pointing out that you have the full set. Then depending on what they say, sell them, keep them as an investment or back to plan A and bin them

A. Create and account and at the top of the page it has a place where you can edit the article. Just take out the part where it has personal information.

Where can you get a Columbia Encyclopedia Sixth Edition or fifth edition?
Q. I need a Columbia Encyclopedia Sixth Edition or fifth edtion. Do you know any stores in NY that have one? I checked Barnes and Noble, Borders and other places. Also, I checked on Amazon. I could get it from there but that would take time, so a store would be neat. Please respond! It would help alot! Thanks!!

A. Well, I've got a fifth edition, which I bought in a "used and rare" bookstore in Chicago. I think your best bet would be a good second-hand bookstore in New York. Try the Strand (see below). If they can't help, they may know someone who can.

What is a good kid friendly encyclopedia of animals?
Q. My son is almost three and is fascinated by animals. He already knows all the household, barn and most zoo animals and is constantly wanting to know more about them and learn about new ones. I would like to get him a good encyclopedia with lots of pictures. It doesn't have to be a child's book as he already knows about all the basics, but I do want to get him one with lots of full colored pictures and general information - what they eat, where live, etc. I live in a very rural area and don't have any good bookstores around so something I can order online is ideal. If you know of any websites I could show him that would be great too. Thank you!

A. Try these. It says 5 and up but my daughter was like that too, (still is at 11) and he can at least look at the pictures!

Why do some people get so fired up at Encyclopedia Dramatica?
Q. For days I have been reading material on this site called Encyclopedia Dramatica which a friend of mine refered me to. From what I understand, quite a few individuals tend to get offended whenever the site pokes fun at their particular culture or beliefs. Sure, they have jokes posted about mine also, but I just laugh right along with it. I personally think that it's a humourous website that people take way too seriously. Lighten up a little.

A. Just look at the publication date. Frankly, though, not that much has really gone on in the last decade. I mean, the stars are pretty much the same as they've always been. If you're talking about space technology and theories, then that is a slightly different matter.

What is the best and most broad animal encyclopedia I can buy?
Q. I am looking to buy an encyclopedia on animals, but I would like it to be very expansive and broad, covering as many species on this earth as possible. I would like to use this as a reference book when drawing animals and fictional creatures, so I have a better understanding of their appearances and adaptations. I really do not want a 30 page juvenile encyclopedia, but a comprehensive and scientific one with an abundance of photographs or accurate illustrations. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, thanks.
Asked by kevintk - Thu Sep 29 01:46:54 2011 - Zoology - 1 Answers - Comments
A. I don't know about a book, but there is a website that has a complete and pretty accurate phylogeny. It also includes pictures. It is difficult to find an animal encyclopaedia because it is either going to be very basic, or very detailed but only include certain groups. This is because of the immense diversity. You will probably be better off going with internet sources, because they can hold more information then a book (size is a limiting factor)

How to you sight or say that you paraphrased a sentance out of a encyclopedia?
Q. How to you sight or say that you paraphrased a sentence out of a encyclopedia? Example: "So and so went across the sea and found a island on his way." what do I put here for the encyclopedia part, the name of who wrote it or the name of the encyclopedia?
Asked by Flight...Night - Sun Jan 2 18:04:45 2011 - Words & Wordplay - 1 Answers - Comments
A. It depends on the citation style you're using. For MLA citations, if the encyclopedia article has an author you would use the format (lastname pagenumber): X went across the sea and found an island on his way (Smith 44). If there's no author, use the first key word in the encyclopedia article title. For example, if the article title is "The Island of M", you would cite it as: X went across the sea and found an island on his way ("Island" 44). If you mention the author's name in the text, you don't need to include it in the citation: Smith says X found an island (44).
