Purpose is a result, end, mean, aim, or goal of an action intentionally undertaken, or of an object being brought into use or existence, whether or not the purpose was a primary or secondary effect. It is possible that an intentional act may have multiple purposes, only one of which is a primary intention while the remainder are secondary intentions. For example, the introduction of a gene into a species of rice may have the primary intention of providing resistance to disease and a secondary intention of reducing nutritional value. The diminished nutritional value, though perhaps regrettable, would be a secondary intention in that it is a known effect willingly accepted.

First attested in c.1290, from earl Old French porpos "aim, intention", purpose is related to from porposer "to put forth," from Vulgar Latin corruption of por- "forth" (Latin pro- "forth") and Old French poser "to put, place". Purpose is related to the term pose used from 1374 as to "put in a certain position," or "suggest, propose, suppose, assume," a term use in Late Latin debating (c.300–c.700) from pausare "to halt, rest, pause".

What is the purpose of the light near the trucks on diesel locomotives?
Q. Some diesel locomotives (at least in the U.S.) have a light over one or more of the trucks or bogies, pointed roughly towards the ground, perhaps angled slightly towards the wheels. What's the purpose of the light? I think I heard once that the light was there simply to help an engineer judge the speed of the locomotive when moving at very low speeds at night (as during yard work). Is this true, or is there some other purpose for it?

A. You are exactly 100% right, they are called ground lights and it helps tremendously to be able to see the ground out of the corner of your vision as you are making switch movements. Using the speedomoter to make couplings and switch moves is a recipe for disaster. As an engineer instructor I am constantly admonishing students to watch the ground and switch crew, NOT the instruments. Without ground lights it is much more difficult to do switching and slow speed moves safely and efficiently. Interesting question, I havent seen it posted here before. George; that is kind of right, but there are separate step lights from the ground lights, sometimes they are on the same switch, sometimes not. Both essential to safety.

A. What is the principle purpose of internal controls relating to plant and equipment? Need a description? The main purpose of internal controls for plant and equipment are several. Companies need to track all assets during and audit and assign a dollar value to each. Assets could be plant or equipment. Equipment could be items such as trucks, computers, scanners, etc. Each asset must have an asset tag that identifies each item. Each item is assigned a specific dollar value and is also amortized. Amortization is a bucket where certain assets are placed. These assets lose their values as time or years passes. Normally, a straight line amortization is used for tax purposes. However, certain assets-like computers-lose their value faster than… [cont.]
